Hair for hope – Part 1

I never know my hair carries so much weight until the day that I decided to go bald for a good cause. The mere thought of being bald already gives me a sense of insecurity and anxiety.

I am raising fund for Children’s Cancer Foundation based in Singapore. I sincerely hope that you could make a donation to support me and the foundation by clicking here. No amount is ever too little for charity!

There was Chinese literature which regarded hair as 三千烦恼丝, which translates to 3 thousand strands of worry. I think I could resonate with this!

My hair is curly/ wavy in nature, not the nice or stylish ringlets though. Before I could afford hair-straightening, I had been struggling to keep my hair presentable, let alone in style. Everyday-is-a-bad-hair-day eroded my self-esteem a lot. Let me further pen down my love-hate relationship with my hair.

During Form 5, I suddenly became A LOT MORE active: besides joining girl guide, I also joined softball club and got to run for green house on sports day, so I had to bike 4km to school for training in the scorching afternoon. My hair was just ear-length but still it’s too hot for my survival and too time-consuming to manage. One hot afternoon, after waking up from nap in sweat, I decided to cut my hair super short. I told the hairstylist,

“I want my hair real short, until the top of my hair could stand up, like tweety bird’s!”

Hair like tweety!

Hair like tweety!

I was happy with the outcome: the head was lighter, using a lot less shampoo, and I did not even need to comb my hair (just shake-dry, haha)! That was the shortest hairstyle I had to date.

Standing on the rightmost, I looked like a boy with spiky hair!

I entered university with the same short spiky hair and that attracted dramas! For one, many uni-mates thought I was a lesbian -_________-

Spiky-hair + tomboyish = les

Too reckless a formula -__________-

Besides, I kept hearing people mentioned “Ah Lian” wherever I went. That stirred my curiosity: who’s Ah Lian?

One fine day, R bumped into me in the canteen and greeted, “Hi, Ah Lian!”

I looked at him aghast: What?! So I’m the legendary Ah Lian??? I wasn’t familiar with this term at all so I asked around what it actually meant and I wasn’t happy!

SY: Ah Lian and Ah Beng, people who are crazy.

Go and have a look at wiki entry of Ah Lian.

Cuteness overload!

I became besotted with this photo blog which publishes amazing cat photos. I provide some samples below.

Now it has become a habit for me to drop by the page on and off to have some “Aw….” moments. The photos are amazing because:-

  1. The photography skill is good
  2. The scenery is nice
  3. Most importantly, the photos just manage to exhibit the gamut of cat characteristics: “manja”, innocence, mischievousness, and cuteness! Besides, the cats are all posing so willingly for the photos instead of shying away!

I do take photos of cute feline friends that I encounter, but none are as good (cute!)! I am sure I can improve on this! More sharing of cat photos from now on! 😉

This cat caught my attention for having a melancholic face.

Goodbye 2013!

It’s the time of the year again that I would conclude the significant stuff I had done! Chinese New Year is also new year, ok? :p

The travel!

It’s almost like visit-Indonesia and -Singapore year for me!

80% of the travel experiences have not been blogged about… Conclusion: I am still a procrastinator this year! Come to think of it, procrastination should be my innate quality!

Cuti-cuti overseas: Laos in January, Yogjakarta in April, Singapore in May and July, Bali in August.

My OZ and NZ exposure has added variety to the nationalities of my friends! 🙂 As a result, I get visits from foreign friends every now and then.

The workout!

At the time of (draft) writing, I have only jogged for 85km. Less mileage compared to 2012 and that would explain why I am carrying 7kg of extra fat from my ideal weight!

I took part in my first obstacle race, the Reebok One Challenge 18.95k 2013, without training! The credit should go to my buddy, Shirely! Without her being my pacer and imposing all the peer pressure, I do not think I could survive all the 9 obstacles. Instead, I would most probably feign sick so that I could be fetched by the ambulance :p

The weekend after that, it was Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013 where I ran for my 3rd half marathon. The run was the most torturing among the 3. Fatigue actually kicked in as early as the 10th km. From there, I alternated running and limping every 5 minutes. But ironically, as suffering as it might be, that was my 2nd best run, which was faster than my first ever half marathon that I trained so much harder (128km of jog!)! Maybe no training is indeed the best training! :p

One piece, as short! – FAQs for Sekeping Serendah

Sometime in mid-January:-

Friend: Where are you visiting for the coming long weekend?

Me: Sekeping Serendah!

Friend: Sorry? Where?

Me: Sekeping Serendah!

Friend: Sorry but I still do not get you.

Me: One piece, as short! SE-KEPING SE-RENDAH!

So, that is my “wishful” translation for Sekeping Serendah! 😉

From the website of Sekeping Serendah, it’s stated that facilities provided are:-

Queen-sized beds with mosquito nets, outdoor shower, swimming pool, outdoor coffee table, and ceiling fans.

Cooking stove, kettle, oven toaster, BBQ equipment, cutleries, fridge, and kitchen sink.

Then in the reservation confirmation email, it’s stated that the facilities provided are:-

Beddings, hot water showerfans, soap, toilet paper, and mosquito coils.

Electric kettle, oven toaster, BBQ pit, charcoal & skewers, cutleries, fridge, plates and cups, and dishwashing liquid.

Being uncertain, I dropped an email to the management:-

Hi there!

I would like to find out more about the kitchen/cooking facilities for glass shed.

Is it correct that there would be:-
1) toaster
2) gas stove,
3) microwave oven,
4) fridge,
5) washing liquid,
6) bbq pit,
7) charcoals (how many is provided?)
8) BBQ skewers (how many?)
9) Cutleries (how many?)

Are there cooking utensils like pot, pan and etc.?

But the reply I received was just merely repeating the standard clause appended to the original confirmation email -_______-

Provided there are beddings, oven toaster, fridge, electric kettle, hot water shower, cutleries, plates and cups, fans, soap, toilet paper, mosquito coils n dishwashing liquid. Must bring your own bath towels, shampoo, hair dryer, toothbrush, torch lights, etc. Place is slightly better than camping.

There’s no TV, no wifi internet and no h/p service inside the retreat.

Can bring own food to do BBQ – provided also the BBQ pit, charcoal & skewers. Or the caretaker can assist to buy the cook food from town.

Q: Can I pay for the remaining money using credit cards?

A: Balance of the money can be paid to the caretaker when you are there. Payment by cash only. So please make sure you bring enough cash.

Q: Tell me more about the kitchen/cooking facilities for glass shed.

A: There are cooking stove, kettle, oven toaster, BBQ pit & wire mesh (caretaker will help set up the fire for you), fridge, trash bin with bag, and dishwashing liquid, sink.

Assuming the caretakers will do quantity-check and replenish the utensils (which I suspect they don’t, haha! This blog stated that there were jugs and pot) during our visit, there are:-

–          8 Skewers

–          2 pairs of tongs

–          1 wok

–          1 spatula

–          1 chopping board

–          Bowls, plates, mugs

–          More than 6 forks and spoons

–          Complimentary instant Milo and Nescafe

–          Initially, knife wasn’t provided, but the caretaker provided one after we request for it.

Bring your own utensils if you have further concern. You might want to bring can- and cork-opener!

Q: Can we still do BBQ if it rains?

A: A big portion of the veranda where the BBQ pit is located, is sheltered by the roof above. If it’s downpour, you might get splashes of rain but BBQ should be able to continue still. Umbrellas are provided at the glass shed.

If rain is still a concern, the contingency is to pan-fry the food or even make good use of the oven 😉 Other than this, maybe you can ask if you can make use of the communal BBQ area.

How to cheat for “Guess the Emoji”

My definition of cheat: not solving the puzzles with own light-bulb-moment, but with the help of tools, people, etc.

1) Print screen and send to (reliable) friends for help

2) Hit the “Ask Facebook” button

3) Log in and out of the app several times and print screen every time you do so. Identify the repeating letters and make guesses based on them.

4) Hit the “Use a Hint” button (15 coins to expose a letter or remove letters; 30 coins to solve a question)

5) Want to use a hint but run out of coins? Pay to get more coins! Or share about the app on FB/Tweeter.

Bali in a few words! Part 1: the Recommendations (a)

Tour guide-cum-driver

Before my Bali trip (end of Aug 2013), I sent out a few requests for tour guiding quotations as well as proposals for itinerary for my 9-day trip.

I believe fixing my itinerary was more challenging because I had not booked any accommodation when I sent out the requests, I just knew I wanted to stay at 3 or 4 different places around the island to save time from travelling to and fro as well as to spend more time at different towns. I listed down places that were of interest to me and requested the tour guides to recommend how I should plan my lodging.

Galung’s quotation came back as the cheapest and he was the only one who patiently answered to my various queries and guided me through my trip planning. So this is factor #1 why I am recommending Galung and crew.

With Galung, before Mt. Batur sunrise hike

With Galung, before Mt. Batur sunrise hike

Factor # 2, Galung speaks decent English and is a fun tour guide to be with. He is also someone who likes to engage logical thinking. He shared many funny stories and the following left the most impression on me (and I don’t know why, haha!)

Story # 1

Galung: *not in exact words* Many people denigrated me on internet by leaving all sorts of inaccurate and malevolent reviews in the forums. One was saying Galung and tour guide B are lousy; tour guide C is the best! If such accusation stands, that means he hired 3 tour guides during his trip to Bali!

*SG and I laughed aloud in the background*

Story # 2

Galung: *also not in exact words* It is my bête noire to see tour guides giving inaccurate information to visitors. There was once I overheard a visitor asking what Balinese gates signify. The tour guide replied, “The gates represent Mount Agung and Mount Abang!” How can that be true? The gates are always symmetrical whereas Mount Agung and Mount Abang do not have same heights!

Balinese gate. Mt Agung and Mt Abang? :p

Balinese gate. Mt Agung and Mt Abang? :p

Galung only accompanied us for first half of our trip. The second half was taken over by Plek. Although being very shy and having inferior English proficiency than Galung, Plek is very helpful and has great sense of photography! :p

Plek took this photo for me! I looked a lot slimmer than in (the cruel) reality!

I visited Ubud during the peak August month. Not only there is no dedicated bicycle lane, the road width is narrow even for the vehicles (1 lane on each bound only), so it is really not bicycle-friendly!

It was really draining to bike around! We tried to bike to Goa Gajah around 4pm We gave up half way due to the traffic condition :(

Inside the glass bottle…

“I want to walk tall, believe in myself, have the courage to ask for what I want and need, and live a life that mattered. I want to wake up in the morning with a smile on my face and know that I am loved and that I belonged. I am desperate to feel worthy and I am hungry for the opportunity to live my fullest potential.” - modified from "The Dark Side of the Light Chasers" - Debbie Ford

Under the apple tree…

"If you are not spending all of your waking life in discontent, worry, anxiety, depression, despair, or consumed by other negative states; if you are able to enjoy simple things like listening to the sound of the rain or the wind; if you can see the beauty of clouds moving across the sky or be alone at times without feeling lonely or needing the mental stimulus of entertainment; if you find yourself treating a complete stranger with heartfelt kindness without wanting anything from him or her... it means that a space has opened up, no matter how briefly, in the otherwise incessant stream of thinking that is the human mind." - A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle

If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other? (God in "Evan Almighthy")

When you travel, it’s not like you take a part of each place away with you; rather, it’s as if you leave a part of yourself there, like a part of you forever belongs to that place – the time, the people, and the things you saw; and over time, it gets burned deeper into your soul - by anonymous
